Out of Order - Opening Night

Out of Order is a group exhibition of new contemporary art by artists with disability / deaf presented by the North Preston Lifesaving Club (NPLC)

This exhibition is a collective of contemporary Crip artists located here in Naarm. By using a variety of mediums, the artists are responding to how they navigate society. We are familiar with how society ‘works’, but how is it represented by artists who it doesn’t work for? Instead of conformation, we exist far more comfortably on the edges. Here’s a peak into that space.

"We aim for the exhibition to be both fully accessible and challenging. We want to explore ideas of accessibility as a generator for new work and how these ideas can be communicated to our community and as a way to open up conversations on what inclusion actually looks like. Exploring identity is important for all of us. Conversations around creative enterprises helps us to understand each other better and fosters an inclusive and diverse Darebin identity. Disability Pride is incredibly important; we need to build this cultural movement and allow different voices to be heard. Disability arts is, in the words of Turner Prize-winning artist Yinka Shonibare, ‘The last Avant-Garde’ (Bragg 2007). As the NPLC is a physical venue we work without the constraints normally in place with a traditional gallery. Architecture as a site of access can be explored and the gallery itself transformed to reflect the ideas of the collective. We aim to increase the visibility of people with disability, particularly on High St, impact the public and create meaningful dialogue than within Darebin. We are tremendously excited by this opportunity and the chance to share our work with Council and the broader community."

BILLIE PARSONS

Billie Parsons is an Australian artist that has returned to Naarm after 20 years of living and studying interstate and overseas. Billie’s practice is posited in the periphery, where detritus is central, where shapes, shadows and echoes collide. A theatrical influence comes from a past career, which has given them a diverse material knowledge, and a unique way of thinking about the construction and function of an object and the practicality or impracticality of the object in time.

Billie’s body of work reflects periods of disruption in their life. Their disabilities are represented through disparate materials including casting alloys and animal intestine, and a focus on using recyclable and recycled materials. The plains of West Texas hosted their most recent research earning them a Masters of Fine Arts. giving another layer to the visual dialogue.
