Out of Order - Exhibition North Preston Lifesaving Club

Out of Order is a group exhibition of new contemporary art by artists with disability / deaf presented by the North Preston Lifesaving Club (NPLC)

This is an exhibition by a collective of contemporary Crip artists located here in Naarm. By using a variety of mediums, the artists are responding to how they navigate society. We are familiar with how society ‘works’, but how is it represented by artists who it doesn’t work for? Instead of conformation, we exist far more comfortably on the edges. Here’s a peak into that space.

NPLC is an artist run initiative by and for artists with disability, queer and / or BIPOC, the first of its kind in Victoria. Architecture as a site of access is explored and the gallery itself transformed to reflect the ideas of the collective. Through increasing the visibility of people with disability, particularly on High St, this exhibition aims to further create meaningful dialogue within Darebin.

BILLIE PARSONS

Billie Parsons is an Australian artist that has returned to Naarm after 20 years of living and studying interstate and overseas. Billie’s practice is posited in the periphery, where detritus is central, where shapes, shadows and echoes collide. A theatrical influence comes from a past career, which has given them a diverse material knowledge, and a unique way of thinking about the construction and function of an object and the practicality or impracticality of the object in time.

Billie’s body of work reflects periods of disruption in their life. Their disabilities are represented through disparate materials including casting alloys and animal intestine, and a focus on using recyclable and recycled materials. The plains of West Texas hosted their most recent research earning them a Master of Fine Arts, giving another layer to the visual dialogue.
