Wurru-Wurru
Wurru-Wurru
Six local artists curated by Yorta Yorta artist, musician and creative entrepreneur Allara Briggs Pattison come together to create brand new works inspired by the theme of Wurru-Wurru (which in Woiwurrung language means ‘Sacred Kingfisher’ and ‘sky’).
The Wurru-Wurru project is designed to bring First Nations people together in traditional ways of ceremony, across a myriad of art, performance and storytelling.
Wurru-Wurru is Woiwurrung for Sacred Kingfisher and also translating to sky is inspired by the spirit of transformation, regeneration, and creation that the season of 'Spring' brings.
Here on Wurundjeri, Woiwurrung Country during the months of September, October and November; it is a time when buds are flowering, murnong is in bloom, the air is warm, birds are singing and nesting, and eggs are plenty. Flying it's Songline to Merri Creek waterways a flock of Wurru-Wurru arrives to bring its next generation into the world.
Once late Summer hits, Wurru-Wurru heads up through the clouds, to Bunjil's home, Forest Country above the clouds, where it returns murrup (spirits) of people who have passed on to the place of durt-bulok (many Stars). The Sacred Kingfisher migrates back to Queensland and even further North leaving the feeling of inspiration, recreation and rebirth on Wurundjeri Country.
Commissioned as part of FUSE Darebin

Deep gratitude and thanks to Uncle Ian Hunter, Traditional Wurundjeri Elder, for his generous sharing of the dreaming story of Wurru-Wurru (Sacred Kingfisher – Woiwurrung). We thank him for the gift and the wisdom in the re-naming process. We thank him for sharing back to Wurundjeri, Woiwurrung people, everyone living on Kulin Land and everyone blessed enough to come across this story
